25km Tour of the Chess Valley

One of my favourite types of training rides is the one hour easy recovery spin. The main aim is a gentle leg spin and not much else, meaning it is the perfect time to just simply ride along. The sort of activity bikes were invented for really. It isn’t all about pain and suffering!

My favourite recovery spin at home is a little ride out from my hometown village of Flaunden to the ‘Pednor Loop’ as it is known in these parts. Basically it is a road that loops around a stretch of countryside without actually going anywhere and just taking you back to where you started. I guess it is a bit pointless in those terms but for cycling it is perfect! The traffic is pretty much non-existent allowing stress-free and relaxing rides with some fantastic views.

To get to Pednor I head out from Flaunden towards Chesham through Ley Hill. Then descend White Hill into Chesham, following the main road past Lowndes Park and taking the first right into Old Chesham and then right again to begin the Pednor Loop. Clockwise or Anti-Clockwise, the decision is yours. I always love turning off the main road into Pednor as it instantaneously feels like you have been transported to the middle of nowhere. A quiet haven, secretely hidden away.

After finishing round Pednor I will usually ride home via Amersham and a coffee stop if the sun is shining. The ride then finishes off by riding along the Chess Valley, which unfortunately involves a rather steep climb away from the river and back up into Flaunden. With coffee in the system though this is of course made to feel much easier!
