LS04 / Southern Snowdonian Hills

85km over Bwlch Y Groes

Never think that you have climbed the last hill until you are sitting on the sofa.

The back road out of Dolgellau heading South is the best start, turn right, and climb up through Tabor to the Cross Foxes pub (excellent food, but too early in the ride, maybe later).

Turn right, and then follow the cycle route on your left after a section of flattish road.

This road is unbelievable, was this road closed due to the pure impracticality of getting motor vehicle over it? Were I considering a new business circa 1960 I would opt for a clutch workshop in this vicinity.

Left at the bottom of the descent.

Left at the end of the road, and left at the very end to join the A470.

Right into Dinas Mawddwy, over the hill, left at the end of the road, and right out on to the road towards Bala.

Left after the garage, 100m or so of main road, and an unassuming exit. Left at the end of the lane.

Follow the road. Left at the end towards Dolgellau, and follow the signs to return to the town.

This, as you would expect, reads easier than it rides.

This is a ride in the mountains and benefits from low gears and favourable conditions. Roberts coffee shop in Dolgellau is probably the world’s best coffee shop, try the Welsh rarebit.
